Word Order

Leila - November 12th

Because English is not an inflected Language, it makes limited use of case or word endings to convey meaning. English word order thus becomes important; it is also more rigid than in most foreign Languages. Normal word order in English is as follows:

subject, verb, indirect verb, direct object, adverbial modifiers.

One should be particularly careful not to separate a verb and its direct object by an adverbial modifier. Thus, one should not say, "I saw yesterday my friend" or "she is taking now her music lesson."

The correct forms are, "I saw my friend yesterday." and "She is taking her music now."
